Is hunting for meat more ethical than buying it from the supermarket?

I am actually a vegetarian myself, so I don't eat either, and I'm not trying to provoke anyone by posting this in the vegetarian section. But I've come to believe hunting is a lot more humane than our factory farming system. At least hunted game lives a normal wild life until it is killed and eaten. Most of the factory farmed animals spend their whole lives in wretched conditions.

Curious to know what others think...there are several hunters in my family, and while I don't believe in eating meat, I have sympathy for the fact that they have the courage to do the dirty work themselves...Is hunting for meat more ethical than buying it from the supermarket?
I was raised in a family where my dad hunted, fished and trapped as a way to help put food on the table. I'm grateful for that. At least the animals had a fair chance. Unlike the animals that die today for me to have my steak. I wish I had more backbone and could do what my father did.

I agree wholeheartedly with your statements.

Thanks
consider that factory farming probably results in more efficient use of the entire animal.more buck for the bang, so to speak. Is hunting for meat more ethical than buying it from the supermarket?
My dumb-azzed ex brother inlaw once shot a swan -- we ate it but it ws pretty gamey. Is hunting for meat more ethical than buying it from the supermarket?
Yes it is more humane than the farm systems. I have always read that wild meat is much better for you too, less fat, no homones or other meds in them. Most hunting is to cull herds so they don't starve from over population.

I can't eat wild meat my taste buds just don't go there.

I 'll just stick with my carrots ;-}.

My thought is: I don't really like to think about where meat comes from. I know it is not an intelligent response....just the way I get through life.
Yes it is. Not only do the animals live a better life before being killed, but it also preserves the natural ecosystem. Humans were a part of the North American ecosystem until fairly recently and that's why you see a lot of overpopulation among wildlife. Farmed animals further disturb the ecosystem with their massive populations and pollute the air, ground and water.
Probably not , but what I find very disturbing is that a person who hunts, enjoys it. I could somewhat understand it if you and your family is starving and cannot find anything to eat and there are only rabbits around. I wouldn't say , Die. but I have known people that hunt and I feel that posing next to an animal that you have just killed and having a photo taken is sick. To me many hunt because they have masculinity issues and can't feel like a big man at home so they hunt to feel male.

And many hunters do not have the skill to kill an animal with one shot, The animal could die painfully. I have seen bow hunters hunt and not all of them are eagle eyes either, especially when they drink.

I know a woman who had 3 brothers in Wyoming murdered by a man who thought he should have the elk they took. So the issues you present are not black and white, there is a lot of grey which convinces me , it's not a good thing.
It's definitely sad what this world's come to in terms of mass producing living beings just to be killed, but I'd have to say that it doesn't really matter which is more humane. In the end, they get killed either way, and if they live in the wild there's more danger and a higher risk they'll get killed anyway.
I am a vegetarian, and feel exactly the same. The animal when hunted doesn't usually suffer and if it does it's not for long. My dad hunts, and although I don't exactly agree with it, I feel better knowing that the animal had a chance to live a real life.
I would rather people hunt than buy from the meat industry, both for their sake (tastier meat, no antibiotics or growth hormones, healthier to eat less meat, etc.) and for the animals' sake (for the reasons listed above).

Edit: 'course, I'd rather people not eat meat at all, but that's not a choice many people make, so between the two... :)
I never thought about it that way...Very good point. I don't buy meat at the grocery..it just looks..awful to me. I buy fish etc. I do make venison stew once a year and use homemade sausages in my Jambalaya. My father hunts and he just has to give it to us, so I cook it. I think you are right on this. If you want to eat meat, do the dirty work or know someone who does. Safer, cleaner, and better for everyone.
Only if you believe in 'Natural law', whereby if you can kill it, it is right that you can kill it.

Unfortunately for that view, Socrates utterly demolished it in the opening warm-up chapters of either 'The Republic' or 'Gorgias', I don't remember which.
Well.. I think not. Choke through this as I do when I think about it. I did quite a bit of hunting in my younger days... and I have watched some of the video on animals in the meat industry. Both are sad. Here's what most don't think of about with hunted animals. Some will tell you that it is humane to hunt animals, we will use a deer for example, because if you get a perfect shot it punctures the heart and death is pretty quick. However... a miss can just say.... anything from puncturing a lung or busting the guts... neither of which is a favorable death. You can be left following a blood trail for an hour through the woods to find an injured animal on the ground, bleeding out and gasping for breath. He has been there for the last while, choking for life on his own blood. Suffering. If you happend to not hit a vital organ directly the damage is still enough that while he can run away where you will never find him... you can rest assured that the next days of his short life are filled with pain and suffering. Worst case scenerio he becomes sceptic from bacteria invading the wound and dies of blood poisoning days later. Either way, it is in no way humane. So I can't really make that call. Both I have seen and they are both equally horrid.

hope it helps.
There's a certain comedian who has this joke about how hunting will be humane when men are out there with bows and arrows and not these advanced gadgets used to turn it into a science. I kind of agree with that.

I think it's more ethical if all the animal is used and you take out the severely unfair advantage of human technology, but I don't agree with it in the least bit.
Sure, that doesn't mean it's not rude and inconsiderate.
